Chapter 11
I tore down the highway and veered down a narrow, dirt road that dipped into the valley. I was driving a little too fast, and I had to force myself to slow down and to control my breathing. If I had an accident along this stretch, it would be a long time before anyone found me, if anyone ever did.
The landscape took my breath away and also filled me with dread. There was so much land and miles to cross that McKenzie could be anywhere. I knew I was being an idiot to just take off into unfamiliar territory when there wasnât a lot of daylight left, but I had to try. The deer seemed to be the only clue that McKenzie was still around these parts, and I guessed I was the only person who knew about his sniper training.
But it made sense that McKenzie had stuck around since his family was probably buried nearby, and thatâs what kept me from turning back. Thompson Falls had been their home, so he could feel close to them here. The sergeant knew the mountains, felt comfortable in them, and he would be far away from the grasping, iron reach of the government.
Where else could Daniel McKenzie go?
It was clever, really. It had been a couple of weeks since the Army lost their grip on McKenzie, so heâd had a long time to put as many miles between him and D.C. as possible. Iâd have assumed heâd hightailed it for more distant parts, but here McKenzie was, right under their noses, which was always the best place to hide.
The road became narrower, bumpier, and when I glanced nervously into my rear-view mirror, I could only see miles of the forest behind me. The sun was low, but out there in the country, at that time of year, the night descended quickly. It could be dangerous, especially for someone unfamiliar with the roads like me, and I just hoped like hell that McKenzie wasnât too far out.
I jumped as my cell phone burst to life, and I glanced at the screen because I didnât want to take my eyes off the rocky road for long. It was an unknown number, but I recognized the D.C. area code, and my chest tightened. There were an awful lot of people in our capital who werenât too happy with me, and they all had the power to order me off the search.
âHello?â I answered when I picked up, but all I could hear was white noise. âHello?â
A voice cut in and out, but the reception was so bad I couldnât hear anything they were saying, and just as quickly as the call came through, it dropped off.
âHuh,â I murmured. âThat was weird.â
I glanced at my cell phone again, but my signal was down to zero, so there was no chance of the person calling back. My burner phone was out, too, and I felt untethered without them, as though I could drift away from the modern world.
